Saturdays With Shakespeare

Its that time of year, love is in the air and the overwhelming pursuit of the "perfect" flowers, gift or date night follows us around wherever we go. From the supermarket chocolates to conversation hearts at every turn, its Valentine's on your mind from here to the 14th. My husband and I feel it too, the overwhelming desire like most other couples to disconnect and make the most of valentines day. Insert the first stop on our Valentine's day series. Our friends over at The Chicago Shakespeare Theatre invited us to the opening curtain of their newest feature "A Midsummers Night Dream". The perfect opportunity for us to pre-celebrate Valentine's day with our very own little day date. You see on Saturdays this winter, The Chicago Shakespeare Theatre presents a 75-minute production of the famous comedy in their newest third theatre The Yard at Chicago Shakespeare. Now if you're anything like me Shakespearian modern English is not your forte, so initially, the thought of spending 75 minutes attempting to understand the performance was less than alluring.

We even dressed up! How fun are these valentines day themed outfits? (notice something different about me? Im officially a new member of the four eyes club) The theatre is located at Navy Pier, so its fairly easy to navigate either by car or public trans- BONUS the theatre has its own parking lot on Navy pier with direct access to the theatre and they validate your ticket for discounted rates. (woohoo for after show cocktails or exploring the pier.

We were happily greeted at the theatre and shown to our seats. The best part about the theatre is there really is not a bad seat in the house. The theatre is elevated making the show easy to view from all angles. Now if you're anything like me Shakespearian modern English is not your forte, so initially, the thought of spending 75 minutes attempting to understand the performance was less than alluring. Those thoughts quickly faded once the play started. We were greeted by one of the actresses to "explain" the story, and what to expect from the play.. a tale of eight star-crossed lovers brought us into an enchanted world of humans, fairies and mythical characters.

As the main characters Theseus, Hippolyta, Hermia, Lysander, Helena, and Demetrius ponder their love In just four days, and well the rest you'll have to find out on your own. Let's just say 75 minutes later I left with a tummy full of laughter and smiling from ear to ear.

Following each performance, you are invited to stay for a discussion with the entire cast and to mingle with them in the lobby. Take this opportunity to start your weekend celebrating LOVE, with an enchanting visit to a realm where love wins every time.
